3D Printing

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is a process of making 3 dimensional solid objects from a digital file.  The creation of a 3D printed object is accomplished by using an additive processes. In an additive process, an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is fully created. Each of these tiny layers can be seen as a narrowly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.

The materials used for 3D printing have come a long way since the early days of the technology. There is now a wide variety of different materials available that are supplied in different states (filament, powder, pellets, granules, resin etc).

Specific materials are now generally developed for specific platforms performing dedicated applications ( the medical industry being one example ) with material properties that are more aptly suited for the application.

3D Magic Works uses PLA (Polylactic acid) filament because of its precise printing capabilities, lack of potential warping in final product and better aesthetic quality.  Another advantage of PLA is that it is made of organic material and is non-toxic.  In addition to the many magnificent colors that are available in PLA filaments, PLA has the added advantage of offering filaments that contain wood fibers or metal properties to give printed objects the look of those elements.

3D printing is not a quick, easy or inexpensive process. With just a fraction of a millimeter being laid down per pass, one can imagine the amount of time it can take to accomplish the easiest or basic of prints.  Print times can widely vary depending on size and detail, prints can take from several minutes to several hours.  In order to offer the products found on 3DMagicWorks.com, several 3D printers are required in order to cut down on the total time needed for producing each piece.  Creating these magic pieces is more art oriented than mechanical.

Please understand that finished 3D prints can/will have minor imperfections.  These minor imperfections in no way, shape or form will interfere with the magic piece or operation of the magic piece and are generally the result of pattern printing.  In fact, because of the special filaments used, these minor inperfections add to the uniqueness and character of each piece.  Every piece that 3D Magic Works produces will be thoroughly tested and inspected for quality and appearance.  If a piece is found to be unsatisfactory, a new one will be produced.  Although some of the pieces may appear fragile, they are suprisingly strong due to the items being built layer by layer.
